Default iCrossing: Facebook Search: Powered by Bing

This has been happening since about 1-2 weeks after Bing launched.

Bing/Microsoft MAY have had to pay for this, but definitely not as much as a "third-party" would have to pay. Remember, Microsoft bought around 1.6% stake of Facebook for $240 million back in late 2007.

If you're in the US, you may have also noticed that a lot of TV shows and other MSNBC publications featured somewhat subliminal Bing advertising... For example, in a popular TV show, the main character may find himself needing to search something on the web. When they sit at the computer and the camera pans to the screen, if you're looking closely you can see the character is using Bing to search!

here is a news from Facebook
About nine months ago, Microsoft became the web search provider for Facebook’s US site. With the change from Live Search to Bing, are web search results in Facebook likely to get increased attention and clickthrough rates?

Users who search within Facebook are presented with a set of three natural and two paid “Powered by Bing” web search results on the right side of the search results page, even when the user is just searching for a person or page within Facebook. Clearly, it’s particularly beneficial to own as many of the top three results in Bing as possible for desirable keywords.

Clicks from these search results should display in your analytics application as referrals from Facebook, not Bing. The referring URLs also include the keyword, making it possible to measure the types of keyword traffic you’re getting from Facebook search.

One client whose data I recently looked at revealed more than a thousand visits in June from Facebook (not all of them from search, of course). Interestingly, the Facebook users only viewed about three pages per visit on the client’s site – about half of what the top search engines’ referrals viewed per visit.

Since we’ve heard that Bing’s audience continued to grow in June, and Facebook’s growth isn’t in doubt either, it’s a partnership that warrants close monitoring in your presences in both Bing and Facebook. As Stan wrote here recently, Facebook is already one of the top referring social media sites to our clients - it may be an increasingly popular search referrer, too.
