In Taiwan, the Customs Office has seized 1,865 Wii and PlayStation 2 video game discs that are reportedly pirated copies.
In this smuggling case, officials said that the confiscated discs are worth as much as $79,000 on the local market.

The Taipei Customs Office requested the help of a Nintendo representative last month after 400 Wii discs were seized at the nation’s ports of entry back in May. All of the discs were certified as pirated copies, and, under the Copyright Law, those involved in smuggling them in were prosecuted.

Although the Wii has not yet officially launched in Taiwan, the console is gaining in popularity. There are reportedly 200,000 Wii gamers in the country.

According to the Taipei Times, “The National Communications Commission said that Nintendo had obtained certification to market the Wii console in Taiwan. Passengers entering Taiwan are allowed to import two Nintendo Wii discs duty-free.”
