Real Madrid routs Mallorca, creeps closer to Getafe
MADRID, Spain (Ticker) - Real Madrid's Brazilian contingent helped close the gap on the Spanish Primera Liga leaders with a relatively easy 4-0 win over Real Mallorca.
Superstar Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before fellow national team member Roberto Carlos scored twice in the 45th and 66th minutes. Julio Baptista wrapped up the rout with his score in the 77th.
The victory leaves the "Galacticos" in third spot, two points behind surprise early-season pacesetters Getafe, which posted a 2-1 triumph against Valencia.
Pablo Redondo broke the 1-1 deadlock with a score in the 89th minute. Ivan Riki levelled the contest for Getafe in the 43rd minute after David Villa opened the scoring at the 30-minute mark.
Celta Vigo had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Cadiz to fall a point behind Getafe. Andres Fleurquin opened the scoring for the hosts after 15 minutes, but Fernando Baiano levelled things 10 minutes later.
Defending champion Barcelona was on its way to a home loss against Real Zaragoza but got goals from stars Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o in the final 11 minutes of the contest to salvage a 2-2 draw. Gabriel and Daniel Milito scored four minutes apart for the visitors.
Fourth-place Osasuna kept up its winning ways with an impressive 1-0 win at previously-undefeated Deportivo La Coruna with Inaki Munoz getting the only goal after 16 minutes.
Espanyol's Fredson opened the scoring at Sevilla which had the team poised to take all three points until Daniel Jarque put the ball into his own net in the last minute of the game to end things, 1-1.
Alaves lifted itself from the bottom of the table with a dramatic 2-1 triumph over Racing Santander for its first win of the season. Wesley opened the scoring in the first half, but his strike was cancelled by Juanjo 11 minutes from time.
In stoppage time, substitute Santiago Carpintero scored to take all three points for Alaves.
Darko Kovacevic and Juanito grabbed a goal apiece for Real Sociedad and Real Betis respectively to see out a 1-1 draw, while Fernando Torres and Mateja Kezman were on target for Atletico Madrid in their 2-0 win over Malaga.
Finally, Villarreal came from a goal down to beat 10-man Athletic Bilbao 3-1.
