Smile 1st Playstation 3 Review...

Taken from T3, Chreers

PS3 played to death

Hands-on with Sony’s Hi-Def big-hitters, including Gran Turismo HD and the first motion-sensitive game for PS3.

Gran Turismo HD: The best-looking but probably least inspiring game we witnessed for PlayStation 3

None of the PS3 games at E3 are even close to being finished, so we should probably cut them some slack. Only we can’t. The cold truth is that Sony’s new console launches in just six months, making what was on the show floor a fairly reliable barometer for the type of experiences you’ll be presented with come November.
But let’s start on a high note. There’s no denying that all the games look as good as anything seen on Xbox 360, with Gran Turismo HD, Heavenly Sword and Virtua Tennis 3 standing out. In fact, GT HD running at full 1080p was one of the most impressive graphical spectacles at the entire show.

Thing is, they feel so utterly current gen that you can’t help but feel a smidge slighted. Sure, this is amplified by the fact that Nintendo has boldly set the benchmark for next-gen gameplay with its revolutionary Wii control system, nonetheless it’s an inescapable fact that you can’t ignore. Admittedly, fantasy fighter Heavenly Sword felt brilliantly slick, but no more impressive than God of War II on PS2 that was also playable. Virtua Tennis 3 feels identical to its predecessor, as does GT HD. And first-person-shooter Resistance: Fall of Man is basically Call of Duty meets Halo 2, but with lots and lots of dust everywhere.

The one game that did actually feel like it was offering a new type of mainstream gaming experience was Warhawk. See, this was the only PS3 title utilizing the new motion-sensing controller. And it worked superbly – expertly responsive and instantly easy to play. It’s a futuristic flying game that calls for you to dip, yank and lean the control pad to steer your craft through an obstacle-riddled landscape while dogfighting. This was a perfect example of how Sony’s next-gen machine can really push its games into another league.
