The PS3 looks set to be the priciest mainstream console ever launched in the world. Ever.

Reports suggest that the PlayStation 3 might be the most expensive console ever, but now it also seems that those of you wanting to get hold of yours on launch day might be asked to reach into your pocket for even more cash.

It won’t be Sony’s doing - at least not directly - but a shortage of consoles will see game-hungry punters heading over to eBay and doling out obscene amounts for the privilege of being among the first to own one.

It happened with the Xbox 360 late launch last year, and it seems that many smaller retailers will be taking advantage of the situation by auctioning off their stock online instead of selling it in-store.

So what does this all mean? It means that if you want a PS3 at launch you’d be better off pre-ordering it ASAP instead of waiting to see if you can get a good deal. All you’re likely to get is a good shafting instead!

You should be able to place a pre-order as soon as Sony discloses some pricing details – an announcement which is likely to be made at the E3 games convention which kicks off on 9th May.
