As mrralphman says, it will work on your 3.71 M33-4.

You can even upgrade it if your unit is as low as 3.52 M33-3.

First congratulations for your new PSP .
Which firmware do you have ?
I have the 3.52m33 . and i dont need to upgrade it until now ..as all the games work perfectly .

You can search about the new features included in every new Firmware released ( exp : 3.90) and you can decide if you want to upgrade or not .

    @cosycat,

Yes, as Spiral said, you'll have to check your PSP version.
I guess it must be an original PSP version (like plain 3.51, 3.60, 3.71...) from Sony Corporation and not a Custom Firmware version (particularly the M33 version) developed by Dark Alex.

If you plan to flash your unit with M33 version, you need a pandora battery and a memory stick (with program to flash your PSP) to install the M33 Custom Firmware version developed by Dark Alex.

For me, because I don't have a Pandora battery and a memory stick (with files and program) to flash my PSP, I go to a shop that provides these services. Initially, my unit has an original Sony PSP version. They put the pandora battery and their Mem Stick on my PSP, reboot the unit and flash it with the 3.71 M33 version.
(Pandora battery is more expensive than an ordinary PSP standard battery. It has a tweaking program installed inside to push the M33 version inside the PSP. Also, there are programs and files on on the memory stick that flashes the PSP to M33 version)

What is the advantage of having an M33 custom firmware version compared to an Original Sony PSP version?
Well, there's a lot of PSP games out there on the web that can be downloaded and run on an M33 versions. My friend here in the Philippines has (over 200) games in his file and I downloaded only the 50 games I like.
For an Original Sony PSP version, you cannot run those downloaded games. You'll have to buy an original UMD games from the store.

After that, I upgraded my PSP unit myself to higher M33 version. First I applied the 3.80 M33 then the 3.80 M33-2. Lately I applied the 3.90 M33.

3.80 has included the internet radio
3.90 has included the skype feature.

It's true that there are games that could only run on lower version and could not run on higher version. However, most of them are upward compatible up to 3.90 M33. Some says there are games that goes slower on higher version but I could not verify these with the games I usually played.

You may have these as your references:

P.S. PSP is a nice birthday present.

I am still runnign 3.80M33. I'm waiting until there is a popsloader available for the new 3.90 version.

Oh and for the record, creating a pandoras battery itsn't that difficult for those who want to try it out. There is a chance that you could end up with a brick, but I haven't experienced it and I've made quite a few batteries.
