Default changing 512MB to 1GB

Hey i read somewhere a while ago about being able to change the capacity of a 512MB SanDisk Memory Stick PRO Duo (the one that comes with the w800i) and i did it to mine. A friend of mine wants me to do it to his now so i was wondering if anyone on here remembers or knows how to do it. I know quite a lot of people had problems with it etc but it worked fine for me. I know you have to go disk management through My Computer but i cannot remember what else to do after this. Any help would be great thanks.

Yeh its true a, my 512mb stick is now 1gb coz i reformated it somehow to use the second half of unallocated space. If you plug your into the computer then right click on "My Computer" and click Manage then a Computer Management box comes up. Then click on Disk Management and it shows your memory stick as two boxes. One active and one unallocated and somehow you can make this second box allocated and reformat it to 1 gig. Anyone?

from ESATO forum

Quote:

ok guys... its working!
512 -> 1024!

and you dont even need any programs, its working with the Disk Manager from WinXP (I dont have Win2000 so I could not test it).

First of all, I am not responseble for any loss of data or any damage of your Hardware. But I can tell you that there is no need to be afraid that the hardware will be damaged. You can, if you have problems, put the memorystick in phone and format it in the phone and everything is ok again...

- Save your stuff from the memorystick.
- Put the stick in the phone (only tested with K750i)
- stick the phone to the cable
- start Disk Manager, you will see the formated and the unallocated space
- mark the Drive icon (of the phone) in the above table, where your partitons are indicated
- If marked, a X type icon appears under the "FILE | ACTION...etc" menu, the X type Icon is for deleting...
- press it and it will delete your partiton for the memorystick, then you have 1 big partiton which is unallocated
- now just make a new partion, and format it using FAT or FAT16
- thats it... now you turned your 512 mb stick into a 1024 stick

I tested it right after doing it and I was able to put more than 600 mb on it, but it had some problems, the phone went of everytime I turned the cam on. But thats actually it. I think its because I stored a Image file which was bigger than 500 MB... its working now perfect, I deleted the 500 mb big image file...
if more problems occur I will let you know...
from replys and posts on other forums ... be warned sometimes it causes more trouble than its worth and files become corrupt and or unstable or crash when files on the extra partition are accessed ...

note also this only tends to be able to be done on SANDDISK or other NONE SONY memory sticks of the cheaper brands

Just done this on the 64MB Sandisk card that came with my K750i and its now a 128MB card.

Gonna try it with my Sony 512MB card as this also shows as two seperate partitions having an unallocated space of 512MB. I'll let you know how I got on.

Thanks to DeviousGSR for starting this thread and BIG THANKS to kkan for finding the instructions.

OK Shasha, I've only tried this on a Sony Ericsson K750i, but heres a step by step guide of the process using a 64MB Sandisk Memory Stick Pro Duo Card that I'm going to double to 128MB.

BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR MEMORY CARD IS BACKED UP TO YOUR HARD DRIVE AS ALL DATA ON IT WILL BE LOST.

If you have any problems with your memory card after doing this you can always use the format function on your phone to revert the memory card back to it's original storage capacity.
  1. Connect your phone to your computer using your datacable and remember which drive letter the computer has assigned it (for this guide we'll say F:\ is assigned to removable disks).
  2. Click the Start Menu in Windows and select Control Panel.
  3. Once the Control Panel window is open, double click Administrative Tools.
  4. In the next window double click Computer Management.
  5. In the new window select Disk Management in the Explorer Pane on the left. The screen will now show all Local & Removable disks on your computer in the pane on the right.
  6. Look at drive F:\ on the lower right pane and you'll see two blocks, one Active Partition 61MB FAT coloured Blue and one Unallocated Partition 57MB coloured Black.
  7. Select the 61MB FAT Active Partition and you should see a Black Cross appear in the tool bar at the top of the window under File, Action etc. Select It.
  8. A pop up message will appear "This is the active partition on this disk. All data on the partition will be lost. Are you sure you want to delete this partition". Select Yes
  9. You should now have a single Unallocated Partition 118MB coloured Black
  10. Next right click the Unallocated Partition and select New Partition
  11. The New Partition Wizard will start. Keep clicking Next till you get to Format Partition page. Make sure to format the new partition as FAT.
  12. Finish running through the wizard.
  13. You should now have one Active Partition 118MB coloured Blue.

Hope this is of some help
