Default [TUTORIAL] Cingular w810i - debranded features without debranding

OK, so here it is.

Alot of people (especially me!) have expressed dissatisfaction with the debranding process and Cingular's w810i, since Cingular has made some pretty nice modifications to the stock firmware, and when you debrand, you lose this nifty stuff.

So, here we go, a method to get the added features of debranding, without actually having to debrand. Unfortunatly this method still requires flashing (uses the FAR+SEFP method described on SE-NSE)

Cingular w810i Customization Pack Release v. 0.1
------------------------------------------------

This pack is intended ONLY for the Cingular-Branded w810i phone. It's purpose is to enable any phone features Cingular has disabled in the process of "Branding" the phone. This includes, among other things, deleting of locked ringtones, games, and applications, the "Jack Splat" key bringing up the activity menu, the use of flash lite themes, etc. Please read this entire document before starting. I may cover something you are wondering about later on in the document. This should be considered a preliminary version, this documentation and/or files will be updated if anyone discovers a problem.

************************************ PREPARING YOUR COMPUTER AND PHONE FOR FLASHING **********************************

For simplicity, I will assume that you are operating using the C: drive, and that FAR Manager is/will be installed in C:\Program Files. If your set up is different, please adjust accordingly.

The first thing you need to do is install FAR Manager from C:\Cingularw810i\Programs\FARInstaller

Once you have FAR Manager installed, copy the C:\Cingularw810i\Programs\SEFP folder to C:\Program Files\Far\Plugins.

FAR Manager is now installed and ready for use. If you have not previously connected your w810i in flash mode to the computer, do it now to install the drivers. Note that the drivers may already be installed if you have installed the Sony Ericsson Update Service. The method is as follows:

1.) Turn the phone off if it is not already
2.) Remove the battery cover
3.) Remove the battery for ~5 seconds
4.) Replace the battery
5.) Hold down the "c" button on the w810i
6.) Plug in the DCU-60 USB cable while holding down the "c" button

At this point, windows should pop up a little yellow balloon saying it found a "USB Flash Device" and ask for drivers. Point it to the C:\Cingularw810i\FlashDriver folder. Once the drivers are installed, unplug the USB cable. Your phone should play the power-down animation after a short time.

OK, Now the phone's USB Flash Drivers are loaded and good to go.

***************************** FLASHING YOUR PHONE TO ALLOW FILE SYSTEM ACCESS *************************************

Now run the program C:\Cingularw810i\Programs\PhoneXS\Phone-XS V2.exe

Follow steps 1-4 above. Ensure that "Select your cable" is set to USB, and press Start. Now, follow steps 5 and 6 above. You should see a brief log in the window showing you that the phone is connected, and showing you some information about the phone. If you do not see this, check that your phone's battery is fully charged. Also check that the USB Cable connection is good, that you held "c" down properly, and the right driver got loaded. If the phone starts up in usb file sharing mode, you did not hold down "c" properly or missed another step in the process.

Now the Phone-XS window should be asking you to supply a MAIN Firmware file and a File System file. Point it to C:\Cingularw810i\Programs\PhoneXS\MAIN\w810_p3k_dc u.49R.ssw - Supply nothing for the File System - Be SURE that the only checkbox you check is for the MAIN firmware. You should never need to flash an FS file or do customization at any time during this process. Ensure "Flash" is set under Configuration.

Now, press the Flash button. The Phone-XS program should spend a short time uploading the .ssw file, it is very small and will only take a few seconds. When it is done, it should have gone through 5 flash blocks. The program has a bug that causes it to never "finish", to get around this, press the STOP button. You will get an ominous warning, this is 100% normal, click yes.

Once again remove the battery from your phone. Also, remove the flash cable. After a few seconds, replace the battery. At this point, your phone does not have any operating system software loaded, so if you try and turn it on, nothing will happen. Do not panic! This is 100% normal, your phone is not "bricked". We don't need the phone to turn on to continue.

Now we are ready to close Phone-XS and move on to the FAR Manager part of things.

Run FAR Manager (C:\Program Files\Far\Far.exe)

Press F11. Scroll down this list and highlight "SEFP 0.10.0.51". Press enter.

Ensure the following settings are highlighted/checked: DCU-60 921600 RTS DTR w300_w810_z550_

Press "Enter The Matrix"

At this point, you get a timer and FAR+SEFP asks you to connect the phone. Follow the same process as you did for Phone-XS, and installing the USB Flash drivers.

On the left side, you should see "FLASH" and "FS". On the right side, you should see "C:\Program Files\Far"

Double click on "FS".

FAR should go through a short script, this normally takes about 20 seconds. If it appears to hang for more than a couple of minutes, close FAR and remove the phones battery, and start over. I have noticed that it seems to hang one out of every 20 tries or so.

***************************************** BACKING UP YOUR EXISTING PHONE SOFTWARE *************************************

At this point, on the left side, you should see a number of folders (ifs, QUEUE, smsdata, system, tpa, usb) - You now have full access to the phone's internal filesystem, and can add/change/delete anything you want. I suggest doing a backup of what you've got on your phone already, unless you're the daring type The process is easy - on the right hand side, navigate to C:\Cingularw810i, then press F7. This brings up the "Create Folder" box, and allows you to choose a name. Enter "Backup" and press Ok. You should now see the Backup folder on the right side. Double click on it. You should now be in the folder you just made. Now, highlight everything on the left hand side. This is done by hovering your mouse over the first item, then holding the right mouse button and dragging to the last item. At the bottom of FAR's screen it should read in yellow "0 bytes in 6 files". Now, press F5. This brings up the Copy dialog. In the box it should show C:\Cingularw810i\Backup. Now press Copy, and go make a sandwich. This will take about 10 minutes, while FAR copies the entire contents of your phone's filesystem to your backup folder.

********************************* ERASING YOUR EXISTING FILE SYSTEM AND UPLOADING A CLEAN ONE ******************************

You do not have to do these next 2 steps unless you have unbranded your phone previously or otherwise made changes to it. If you are dealing with a stock Cingular w810i, skip 2 paragraphs forward.

Now click back into the left hand side, and make sure you still have all 6 folders selected. Now press F8. This will bring up the delete dialog. Go for it! This will wipe out every file on your phone (Which is why you just backed them up, in case you want them back later). Give it another 10 minutes or so.

Now, you've got a blank slate. Navigate on the right side to C:\Cingularw810i\CingularFS. You should see the same set of folders that you just deleted from your phone. Now use the right mouse button to highlight everything on the right side, and press F5 to copy it to your phone. Go get a drink, this will take another 10 minutes or so.

Now you've got a stock, pristine Cingular-branded w810i. How absolutely boring! But at least you have full access to its file system. Now is when we get into the guts of things and actually change things around.

******************************************* CUSTOMIZING YOUR W810i *************************************************

Each one of these customization steps is optional. I have detailed the changes in each file at the bottom of this readme. If you are only looking to re-activate the disabled features, the only thing you need to do is copy over Customize.xml to the correct location. Then you can skip ahead to Flashing the MAIN firmware back to "normal". If you want to do more than that, read on!

====== Customize.xml ======

Navigate to \FS\tpa\preset\custom on the left side.
Navigate to C:\Cingularw810i\Customizations\CustomizeXML on the right side.
Highlight Customize.xml on the right side using the right mouse button, and press F5 to copy it to the phone.
Highlight ACTIVITY_BUTTON_HOOK.itm on the left side, and press F8 to delete it.
Navigate to \FS\tpa\preset\system\custmenu on the left side.
Highlight ACTIVITY_BUTTON_HOOK on the left side, and press F8 to delete it.

====== Layout.xml ======

Navigate to \FS\tpa\system\layout on the left side.
Navigate to C:\Cingularw810i\Customizations\LayoutXML on the right side.
Highlight Layout.xml on the right side using the right mouse button, and press F5 to copy it to the phone.

====== Acoustics ======

Navigate to \FS\ifs\settings\acoustic on the left side.
Navigate to C:\Cingularw810i\Customizations\Acoustics on the right side.
Highlight all files on the right side using the right mouse button, and press F5 to copy them to the phone.

====== Camera Driver ======

Navigate to \FS\ifs\settings\camera on the left side.
Navigate to C:\Cingularw810i\Customizations\Camera Driver on the right side.
Highlight camdriver0.dat on the right side using the right mouse button, and press F5 to copy it to the phone.

====== Bluetooth HID Profiles ======

Navigate to \FS\tpa\system\loconn\remote\archive on the left side.
Navigate to C:\Cingularw810i\Customizations\Bluetooth HID Profiles on the right side.
Highlight everything on the right side using the right mouse button, and press F5 to copy them to the phone.

====== Media Player Skin ====== **** WARNING **** Some users have reported MP Skins cause issues with flash themes.

Navigate to \FS\tpa\system\multimedia\mp on the left side.
Navigate to C:\Cingularw810i\Customizations\Media Player Skin on the right side.
Highlight everything on the right side using the right mouse button, and press F5 to copy them to the phone.

====== Flash Menus ====== **** NOTE that there are 2 steps to this, and 2 different folders.

Navigate to \FS\tpa\preset\system\desktop\flash on the left side.
Navigate to C:\Cingularw810i\Customizations\Flash Menus\SWF on the right side.
Highlight "DisableFlashDesktop" on the left side using the right mouse button, and press F8 to delete it.
Highlight everything on the right side using the right mouse button, and press F5 to copy it to the phone.

**** The following part is only if you want to store the flash themes in the phone's memory. You can skip this part and copy them over to your Memory Stick later, or copy them using bluetooth, etc. The .THM theme files do not need to be stored in a particular place, as long as they are accessible from the phone. ****

Navigate to \FS\usb\theme on the left side.
Navigate to C:\Cingularw810i\Customizations\Flash Menus\THM on the right side.
Highlight everything on the right side using the right mouse button, and press F5 to copy them to the phone.

********************************************* END OF BUNDLED CUSTOMIZATIONS **********************************************

At this point you can do anything else you want within the filesystem. Upload your own .SWF flash menus, .THM themes, etc. Triple check that you put everything in the right folder. The phone won't know what to do with a file you put in the wrong spot and will just happily ignore it. You should be familiar enough with navigating through the phones internal filesystem to be able to do any other changes you might want to. Note that you can edit .xml files and the like directly from FAR by clicking on the file you want to edit, then pressing F4.

******************************* BEGINNING OF RESTORING PHONE TO WORKING STATUS **************************

OK, So now, after all that mucking about, we are done customizing the phone, and are ready to return it to a working state. On the left hand side of FAR, keep going up a folder until you leave the FS. FAR Manager will ask if you want to exit the CSFS loader, pick yes, then press F10 to exit FAR Manager.

Remember, at this point your phone still contains the w810_p3k_dcu.49R.ssw firmware, which does not contain an operating system. So don't panic if your phone isnt doing anything, it's normal

Remove your phones battery again, leave it out ~5 seconds, and replace it.

Run the program C:\Cingularw810i\Programs\PhoneXS\Phone-XS V2.exe

Connect your phone to Phone-XS using the same proceedure used at the top.

This time, we will be flashing the E:\Cingularw810i\Programs\PhoneXS\MAIN\W810_R4EA03 1_MAIN_CINGULAR_RED49.mbn file.

The process is the same as above, except this time you will not have to press STOP - The flashing will finish correctly. Disconnect your phone, remove the battery for ~5 seconds, re-insert the battery, and replace the battery cover. Congradulations! You're done! Turn the phone on and go to the main menu, then go to settings. Under general, scroll all the way down to Master Reset, choose that, then pick "Reset Settings" - This is the final step needed, at this point you should be all set up and good to go. If you want to make further changes, you can refer to the QuickGuide for an easy reminder of the whole process.

****************************** POTENTIAL PROBLEMS YOU MAY RUN INTO *********************************

If you get an error when loading SEFP, check to see if your computer has a serial port, or a COM port. Chances are it does not. SEFP has a bug that requires you to have at least one COM port on your system. You will need to emulate a COM port using software, or physically add a USB-to-Serial port converter to the system, or add a bluetooth USB adapter, etc.

If flash themes arent working, be sure you uploaded both the .SWF and the .THM files to the right places, and also uploaded the Customize.xml. Also ensure you deleted the DisableFlashThemes file. Also ensure you did the master reset/settings reset.

If you are having a problem getting PhoneXS or Far Manager to detect your phone, ensure the USB Flash Drivers are installed correctly, and that you are following the 'hold "c"' method properly.

****************************** WHAT EACH FILE/FOLDER CHANGES *****************************************

====== Customize.xml changes: ======

* Everything locked in the filesystem becomes unlocked. Note that this will allow you to delete/move things you might not want to.

* Network search/selection menu re-enabled

* A number of other disabled options have been re-enabled

* Flash lite themes enabled

* Ringtone Restriction removed

====== Layout.xml changes: ======

* Lots changed. Makes things more readable. Snagged from post 206 by skindeep on this thread: [Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...]

====== Flash Menus: ======

* Snagged from various places online, including topsony, esato, se-nse, and howardforums.

====== Media Player Skin: ======

* Snagged from topsony
* Some users report that customizing your Media Player Skin causes issues with flash menus. So far, I have not seen this. But, be aware.

====== Bluetooth HID ProfileS: ======

* Snagged from topsony

====== Acoustics: ======

* These are qwerty12's v2 acoustics, with the ringer file being replaced from clubw800i. I have found this combination to work the best for me.

====== Camera Driver: ======

* This is Chengrong's 8.53 super driver, so far it has worked the best with night photos out of all the drivers i've tried. It's day mode is also very good.

******************************************** THANKS ********************************************

Thanks to gbrooks, hendrix, lemming, den_po, qwerty12, pisanggoreng, Jagheterfredrik, Darkmen, Chengrong, and everyone else who contributed far more than I did to making this possible.
