It seems that true television-by-broadband may be on the way. US network NBC has announced plans to launch two online channels filled with the same sort of content as you would expect to see on “proper” television – not the clips, snippets and supplementary videos viewers are normally offered.
FirstLook.com will broadcast premieres of big budget series that are yet to be shown on network television, as well as online-only content, while DotComedy.com will feature 30 “webisodes” of the US version of The Office as well as classic comedy such as Dream On and The Munsters and, impressively, the first ten years of Late Night with David Letterman.
You won’t be able to download the shows to your hard drive or transfer them to a portable video jukebox (at least not at first), as NBC will also be launching a newly developed media player application.
The announcement comes after rival network CBS launched InnerTube, its own online video resource.
This is good news for UK telly addicts, as it means we can get our hands on top US shows before they hit our networks – but we do wonder when British television networks will follow the lead of NBC, CBS and, as we reported earlier in the week, MTV and start offering a full range of programming over the Internet.
