Elkware has been busily cranking out mobile phone games by the handful. After nabbing the X-Files license from 20th Century Fox, Elkware didn’t waste anytime in producing another adventure game based on their House of Tales game engine. The X-Files mobile game is a great combination of drama and suspense, there is a lot of good adventure gaming in the game.
Like all the other House of Tales game, X-Files has a clean and very useable interface. The mobile phone screen isn’t cluttered and it makes navigating through the game a snap. The graphics are pretty and there are some nifty animations you’ll encounter as your progress through the story. I didn’t hear any sound out my 7610’s speakers, so I’ll write this review based on the assumption that this is an all silent game. The colors used in the game are very subdued and is a tribute to the atmosphere that Elkware is trying to establish for the game.
If you’ve ever played any adventure games on your personal computer, you shouldn’t have any difficulty in grasping the concept of X-Files’ gameplay. You’ll take on the role of Agent Scully and Agent Mulder as you attempt to solve one of the famed X-Files cases. The game features a lot of settings for you to explore and there is an overall sense of mystery and foreboding surrounding the game. Elkware didn’t skimp much on the value they provide because there are numerous objects and situations for you to interact with. The inventory is easy to use and you won’t find yourself having any problem at all with selecting or using the objects that you want.
The difficulty is just right for a game of this type, especially when you take into consideration that this is a mobile phone game. If you want to finish the game, you’ll find that you’ll have to be resourceful. The solutions to the puzzles can sometime appear out of nowhere, still though I had a great time in solving the puzzles. If you find yourself stuck, you can easily access game hints from the House of Tales forum. It is rare for me to encounter a mobile game that will make me seek some outside help, but I’m not ashamed of the fact I was forced to solicit aid in the forums for one of the game’s more difficult problems. Some of the problems in the game can get really dicey, but hey! I’m not complaining at all. The challenge is pretty good.
X-files as an adventure game is curiously short, you can finish it in an hour and a half or so (including asking someone else for help). However for a mobile game, it does strike the proper balance of game time, for the price of admission, you shouldn’t find yourself complaining too much about the game’s length. In fact X-Files cost about as much as watching a movie, and it might even last longer, not to mention the story is good enough to rival a New York Times short story recommendation.
I really enjoyed my experience playing this X-Files mobile game. I’m hoping that Elkware releases more games of the same vein, so that I can get my regular adventure gaming fix, mobile style.
