Nintendo has filed new touch-screen technology patents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, presumed to relate to a future version of DS. Patent #20060025218 is related to "apparatus utilizing touch panel and storage medium game program." Diagrams associated with the file show a DS-like device; but the touch-screen can detect more than one point of contact simultaneously. The file describes how on-screen characters could be controlled in three dimensions through dual-contact controls.
It states, "In response to an operation of the touch panel by a player, coordinates values of the detected two points are detected, and at least one of a distance between the two points and an angle of the line connecting the two points is calculated."
It adds, "Furthermore, change amounts of the distance and angle between the two points are calculated. A movement parameter such as a travel speed and a turning angle is set on the basis of at least one of the calculated distance and angle, and the movement of the character such as travel and turning is controlled on the basis of the movement parameter."
Though most likely related to a new version of DS, there are rumors, entirely unsubstantiated, of Revolution featuring some form of touch-technology.
