If you use a R4 card you need to have a firmware to run the menu.. go to the R4 homepage and download the newest firmware and put it on the root of your empty micro sd and the create a folder called NDS games or what ever you want and then insert the micro sd into the R4 and the to the nintendo ds. then you would know what to do after that. if there is any questions about concerning R4 then just ask me... i just recently got a R4 and i have preatty much figured all out with it... and for those who are totally n00bs with R4 just go to youtube and search for nintendo ds R4 and you'll find all sorts of tutorials.
