Synaptics' concept phone is a touch of class, and unbelievably clever...

Using what Synaptics has dubbed ClearPad technology, the Onyx phone can tell whether you’re pointing or tapping at the screen, and recognises shapes and gestures too.
It’ll even know whether you’re holding it next to your head, or pointing with a finger, and makes using menus much more natural.
Synaptics says you’ll be able to close tasks by “swiping an X over them”, or send messages by “swiping them off the screen.”
The concept design also houses GPS and a music player, and although it’s still on the drawing board, Synaptics reckons it won’t be long ‘til all our communications, PDA, media and navigation boxes combine in a form like this.
We hope they’re right. The Onyx phone is a seriously swish bit of kit, and that touch screen is just crying out for our sticky fingers. The future of phones has never looked more appealing!

THE V Festival takes place this weekend so I guess this is the handset to be seen with among the crowds. The VIRGIN MOBILE LOBSTER is the firm's latest 544 handset is designed especially for music lovers with an MP3 player, 1.3 megapixel camera, stereo headset and 64MB memory card.
And while that might not sound over-doing it on the technology front, it comes in at a decent £69.99 with a pay-as-you-go contract so it won't break the bank.
The clamshell is out now from Virgin Mobile Stores and the like or you can order one by phone on 0845 6000 600.
You even get £5 airtime thrown in!

HTC’s follow up to its Prophet and Magician PDAs has a 2-megapixel camera and comes in white or black.

When it comes to aiming them at Joseph or Josephine public, HTC has taken the scattergun approach. So if you fancy a slim smartphone with a good-sized keyboard for email and messaging there’s the HTC S620. It’s 12.8mm thin, weighs 130g, has a 2.4-inch colour screen and is the first device to sport HTC’s JOGGR touch sensitive navigation bar. For those who like to know where they’re going there is the HTC P3300, the company’s first dedicated navigation PDA with in-built GPS and TOMTOM Navigator 6 software. The HTC P3600 is a compact multimedia PDA with 3G connectivity as standard and a craving for HSDPA.

The HTC S310 is a small smartphone for businessmen and consumers who don’t fancy carting a PDA around.

European’s can get the P3600 and S310 from this month, with the HTC S620 and P3300 following on in October 2006.

Classy looks and clever insides, Izen's Krma's got lots of added extras...

You might not have heard of Izen, but once you’ve clapped eyes on their debut mobile you’ll want to hear a whole lot more!

Dubbed the Krma, the company’s first phone’s a stylishly sculpted smartphone built around a Pocket PC.

That means it’ll cram all your office duties, and a whole lot more, into a shell barely bigger than a run of the mill candybar.
What’s more interesting though, is that Izen wants to integrate the blower with a host of online services.
For a start its offering 25-gig of free online storage with each handset, as well as planning services to automatically back up all your data and deliver new software over the air.

The phone itself sports a 2.2-inch LCD, Bluetooth and a microSD card slot. Its tri-band too and looks an absolute beauty.

Keep it here for more news from Izen as soon as we hear it.

    Thanks T3

Nokia shows off Aeon 'wearable' concept phone

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Nokia has unveiled its latest concept phone, designed to highlight the company's focus on products that allow users to more readily stamp their personality on their gadgets.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The concept phone, dubbed Aeon, combines two touch-sensitive panels mounted on a fuel-cell power pack. The handset's connectivity and electronics are built into the panels to allow them to be used independendently. When assembled, one panel would operate as the display, the other as the keypad. Since the buttons are entirely virtual, Aeon can flip instantly between a numeric pad for dialling, a text-entry pad for messaging, or a media-player controller.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

It's a cute idea and one that ties in with Nokia's expectation that phones will become essentially "wearable" devices - if foresees users removing one of Aeon's display panels and mounting it on a watch-like strap or worn as a badge.

More than a phone, Aeon might tap into local wireless networks to transmit data acquired from sensors such as devices that monitor the user's health signs - which is the kind of application the company has in mind for its Wibree personal-area network technology.

Streamed TV to your mobile looks amazing via an HSDPA enabled handset and network - no glitches and a brilliant picture...

In South Korea things are different. They like a little bit of food with their garlic, their cars with a Hyundai badge front ’n’ rear (poor blighters), and their mobile 3G services blisteringly quick and reliable. And whaddya know, they’ve nailed 3G. But all thanks to the importance they place on services – handsets come second here, as there’s one to suit any need - and some slick new technology dubbed HSDPA. Point is, we should be screaming for some of this cheetah-speed 3G action over here… but we don’t need to, because it’s coming in time for Christmas and is going to change the way you use your mobile forever!
So what is all this HSDPA malarkey? Well, it stands for High Speed Downlink Package Access (HSDPA) and is about to light a roman candle under 3G as we currently know it, sparking a revolution in 3G services. Soon you’ll be receiving bonafide broadband speed access on your handset (at no extra cost, mind), meaning ultra-smooth video streaming, mobile TV, lightning-speed music downloads, near-perfect video calling, and stacks more besides. Point is, suddenly you’re able to demand a lot more from your mobile and it’s going to deliver with the reliability and efficiency of a German flipchart fetishist at a timetabling convention.
Whereas current phones with the now-standard UMTS chipset deliver download speeds capped at around 356KB per second, an HSDPA handset sucks data at up to a whopping 1.8MB per second. This means your mobile phone immediately becomes a significantly more powerful device and opens up a new world of near-instant content.
Vodafone is the first out of the blocks in the UK, with an HSDPA service already up and running, although you’ll have to hold on until Christmas to benefit from these blistering 3G speeds as you’ll need an HSDPA enabled handsets – Vodafone recently announced eight, including the Motorola V1100 and Samsung ZV50, which will hit the UK by Christmas. Sure, it means you’re going to need to fork out on a new phone, but it promises to be worth making the hop to HSDPA for the bullet-speed benefits.
Qualcomm is the company behind the creation of these slick new chips, and their spokesperson Richard Tinkler tells us that “Orange will be launching an HSDPA service early in the New Year, with the other networks such as O2 following soon after”. So basically, this breakneck speed 3G should become a standard within the next few months, and deliver on the initial promise of 3G that we haven’t really had an opportunity to experience in the UK. And speeds are going to climb steadily over the next two years, increasing to 2.4MB per second to 3.6MB per second!
In South Korea where high-speed 3G is supported by stacks of cool and easy-to-find content, we’ve been a bit starved over here. However, this new technology should see an upsurge in the quality and depth of content available, be it movies, TV, music, web applications and more.
Another uber exciting development is the birth of HSUPA, which will be reaching us within the next 12-18 months. This stands for High Speed Uplink Package Access (HSUPA), and is a chipset and service that enables ultra-fast uploading of content from your mobile to the web. At the moment upload speeds max out at around a pathetic 256KB per second, but HSUPA delivers speeds of around 1.8MB per second, which means you’ll be able to upload videos at speed to the web. You wait, come late 2008 the likes of YouTube are going to go off the scale, as it’s going to be a breeze shoot video and uploading video remotely from your phone.
Again, as with HSDPA, this will come to life with a new series of handsets that will launch late in 2007 with dual chips that have both HSDPA and HSUPA. That’s the next big step, and when 3G will be at the peak of its powers.
Watch out for more next-gen mobile updates every day this week, and check back this Friday for the first details on 4G and what we can expect from our phones in the year 2015!
    FAQs
