New audio chip NEC: 128-tones polyphony
NEC has introduced new audio chip µPD9971, which will ensure 128-tones polyphony in cell handsets.
The new chip ensures a pseudo 3D sound positioning (if the phone has a stereophonic system), 128-tones polyphony (PCM), audio effect such as “echo”, “reverberation” and so on (7 effects in all) and also support applications in SMF (Standard MIDI) and Mobile-XMF (Extensible Music Format, recent development by MIDI Manufacturers Association).
The trial lots of the new chips have been already shipped to NEC clients, the wholesale price makes up some $7.6 per unit. The mass production of the µPD9971 starts in August 2005.
