Most of you already know this, but
for those who do not... If you go to Windows update be prepared to deal with WGA...Windows Genuine Advantage... MSFT will check your xp installed version to see if it is genuine...if it is not, they will not allow you to update; however, The easiest way around this is to set up your computer for automatic updates... then you will be notified when new critical updates are ready to be installed. This is far easier than trying to use some unknown software to out smart the techies at MSFT... Happy and safe computers To enable Automatic MSFT updates on your windows xp pro, Right click my computer, left click properties, left click automatic updates...NOTE: i have it tell me when updates are ready before downloading so I can read the knowledge base article at MSFT to see if I REALLY need this update or not... ALSO, go to start>>>programs>>>administrative tools>>>services>>>automatic updates>>>and set to automatic...You now will be notified by a task bar icon near the clock when updates are available...I highly recommend that you read the MSFT knowledge base articles before installing updates because history shows us that some xp updates do more damage than they prevent...safety first...Best regards A NOTE TO USERS OF WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2: If you experience problems installing your software after installing XP SP2, The reason is explained by Microsoft below: /NOEXECUTE This option is only available on 32-bit versions of Windows when running on processors supporting no-execute protection. It enables no-execute protection (also known as Data Execution Protection - DEP), which results in the Memory Manager marking pages containing data as no-execute so that they cannot be executed as code. This can be useful for preventing malicious code from exploiting buffer overflow bugs with unexpected program input in order to execute arbitrary code. No-execute protection is always enabled on 64-bit versions of Windows on processors that support no-execute protection. There are several options you can specify with this switch: /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN Enables DEP for core system images and those specified in the DEP configuration dialog. /NOEXECUTE=OPTOUT Enables DEP for all images except those specified in the DEP configuration dialog. /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSON Enables DEP on all images. /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF Disables DEP. WARNING: YOU MUST USE CAPITOL LETTERS: /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF AN EXAMPLE IS FOUND BELOW: In the boot.ini file edit line {WITH NOTEPAD} "optin" to "AlwaysOff": [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF /fastdetect SOURCE: Code:
