Default Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas-The Review

The idea of a console-specific title has fallen by the wayside as the revenue for big-time franchises continue to skyrocket. While we’re probably not going to see Forza Motorsport on the PS2 or God of War on the Xbox, we can count on indy studios to eventually offer up titles originally launched as console exclusives for other platforms. The best example of console exclusivity thrown out the window has to be Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto Double Pack for the Xbox. Sony got (bought) the jump on the competition, but eventually Xbox’ers were able to enjoy the GTA franchise; slightly enhanced for the more powerful system. The same strategy has been employed for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas which is landing on game store shelves some seven months after it dropped on the PS2. While most gamers who are GTA fanatics have already played Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, there are those who are holding out for the enhanced Xbox version, or simply don’t own Sony’s hardware. Either way, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has received mass amounts of critical acclaim for its emotional story, open-ended gameplay, and overall scope. But is the allure still there - months after its original release? It’s time to find out…

    CJ don’t play

Do you happen to be one of our readers perched on the high end of the core videogame demographic? If so, then you’ll immediately recognize the lifestyle that is portrayed in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The early 90’s was a time when MTV was really starting to take off; before the music videos were replaced with silly reality programming. If a Pearl Jam video wasn’t playing, it was a track by NWA (edited front, back, and side-to-side of course), Public Enemy, or 2Pac. Movies also played a large role in showing the grittier side of street life - almost glorifying it - while at the same time trying to send a message of positivity. Many of you will remember Boyz n the Hood (with a young, air-punching Cuba Gooding Jr.), or the slightly edgier Juice. The influences came from both coasts in music and movies during the early 90’s, but it seemed as though the Compton scene - complete with Raider gear and colored bandanas - stole most of the show. Early 90’s West Coast, therefore, made perfect sense for Rockstar’s next Grand Theft Auto title. They had already hit the streets of latter-day New York, and the clichéd boulevards of Miami in the 80’s, so gang life in the early 90’s seems like a natural progression, er regression, er…next step. Even though there aren’t any exact replicas of Los Angeles turf, make no mistake about it; Los Santos is a dead ringer for Los Angeles, and the references to early 90’s gang life and popular culture are deliberately dead on the papers (that’s money for the street-stupid).

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas puts you in control of Carl Johnson, or “CJ” as his friends like to call him. CJ grew up in Los Santos but left to escape the mea city streets. His return was prompted by the slaying of his mother at the hands of gang activity. It’s the same ol’ same ol’ when CJ returns to Los Santos. He’s immediately framed by the LSPD and given a cold welcome on his return. Then, he learns from his brother Sweet that the gang wars between Grove Street Families (CJ’s gang) and the Ballers (or Ballas) is getting pretty deep. It doesn’t help much that the corrupt cops from CJ’s past drop him off right in the middle of Baller territory. You’ll start out trying to escape Baller territory with only a bicycle at your disposal. The first mission will involve making it back to “The Grove” in one piece, which basically serves as a tutorial for the rest of the game. Once back in The Grove, CJ will meet up with his old gang members and also have some wicked flashbacks inside his the house in which he grew up. CJ’s old pad serves as the first “save house” which is basically a place where game progress can be stored. A Save House also allows cars, bikes, and other vehicles to be stored and swapped, similar to the garages in the previous GTA titles. Save Houses also allows CJ to store clothing that has been purchased at the various shops around the map. Any clothing or accessories not currently worn by CJ will be stored the Save House closet and can be donned only when returning to this point.
