Windows Vista has an 80% chance of meeting its scheduled January 2007 release date - and that's according to Bill Gates himself.
Gates, speaking in Cape Town, bellowed, "We got to get this right. If the feedback from the beta tests shows it is not ready for prime time, I'd be glad to delay it."
Indeed, Microsoft has already pushed back the release at least once. There were originally plans for Vista to be released this year, but a series of setbacks led the software giant to delay the launch until the beginning of 2007.
Vista will feature a whole host of new bells and whistles including ultra-quick booting, 3D panes and extra security.
PC owners are now able to get their mitts on a pre-release beta version of the operating system, the idea being that they report back to Microsoft with details of problems and bugs encountered. If the big M can't squash these bugs in time, we might be waiting until well into next year for XP's successor to finally arrive.
