Blueberries contain phytochemicals (pigments that are the color blue, and not from artificial dyes!) that may protect our brain and nervous system from oxidative stress (we are oxygen using creatures). This may help the aging process (imagine our brains rusting? Only kidding).
Phyto's aside, blueberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, potassium, and are only 40 calories per 1/2 cup with 2 grams of fiber. When eaten raw, they contain a high water content (eating raw fruits is another way to up our water intake) and all around, they make a nutrient dense food.
Blueberries can be added to cereals, fruit salads, yogurts (my favorite is vanilla nonfat), ice-cream or eaten plain with a little nonfat whipped cream. Of course they can be added to muffin, waffle and pancake recipes and yes, to pies too! Add blueberries to skim milk, half a banana and some protein powder with ice cubes and blend and you've got a great quick meal . Blueberries also stay fresh longer than all the other berries, are available year long and have the least amount of pesticide residue of all the berries.
So, deep color, low-fat, low calorie, some fiber and good for our brain and body. When was the last time you thought to munch on some blueberries?
!
I ate Blueberry Doughnuts a week ago from Dunkin Doughnut ... It's sumptuous and very sweet. I thought, for a while, those berries are not so nutritius ... now I have to eat more to feed the brain ... maybe a lot of blueberry jams with my breakfast ( but I'll have to watch my sugar level)...
