Lightbulb Having battery problems? This is what the future awaits..

Don't know if it's been posted before or not, but here it goes...
Many of us smartphone users (especially the nokia 95 ones :P) are having battery problems.. Let's say you're on a boring trip, and want to play some games... in a few hours, your phone will be dead, and pretty useless without a way to charge it up...
But rest assured, the future has a pretty loaded bag of alternatives for us... Here's some of the few i stumbled upon:

- Sugar powered batteries!!!
Juicing up your cell phone or iPod may take on a whole new meaning in the future. Researchers at Saint Louis University have developed a fuel cell battery that runs on virtually any sugar source - from soft drinks to tree sap - and has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium ion batteries, they say.

And also the sony version of the sugar battery:
Sony, one of the world’s largest battery makers, developed a battery that generates electricity from carbohydrates (sugar). The device was developed based on the same power generation principles found in living organisms. Test batteries showed the ability to produce 50 milliwatts - currently the world's highest level of power production for passive-type bio batteries (a system in which reactive substances such as glucose and oxygen are absorbed into electrodes through a process of natural diffusion). By combining 4 battery units, the supplied power is sufficient to operate a typical MP3 player or cell phone.

- Ultracapacitors
Just about everything that runs on batteries - flashlights, cell phones, electric cars, missile-guidance systems - would be improved with a better energy supply. But traditional batteries haven't progressed far beyond the basic design developed by Alessandro Volta in the 19th century. Until now.
Joel E. Schindall, the Bernard Gordon Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and associate director of the Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems; John G. Kassakian, EECS professor and director of LEES; and Ph.D. candidate Riccardo Signorelli are using nanotube structures to improve on an energy storage device called an ultracapacitor.

- Nanogenerators

As the sizes of sensor networks and mobile devices shrink toward the microscale, and even nanoscale, there is a growing need for suitable power sources. Because even the tiniest battery is too big to be used in nanoscale devices, scientists are exploring nanosize systems that can salvage energy from the environment.

- Silver-Zinc Batteries
I have heard of silver-zinc batteries before, but this is the first I have heard of them actually being mass-produced as of late. Apparently, because the source materials can get expensive, the batteries were pretty much forgotten long ago and replaced by chemistries such as lithium- and nickel-based batteries. ZPower is hoping to change that with their new nano-engineered silver-zinc batteries. The chemistry is inherently safe according to our source article, and the batteries can be safely ramped up in size. ZPower is still working on their chemistry, though, and does not expect the batteries to be shipping until next year.

- Micro Fuel Cells
Once commercialized, micro fuel cells promise more backup "green power" at lower costs than competing battery technologies. Batteries, closing in on their performance limit, may fall short in the next generation of powerhungry cell phones, laptops, digital cameras, camcorders, PDAs, and military applications.
The task of recharging delineates batteries and micro fuel cells. Users can recharge batteries by supplying them with the appropriate voltage and current. However, users recharge micro fuel cells by refilling their reservoir or by removing the spent fuel cartridge and replacing it with a new one. Recharging a conventional battery can take hours, while replacing a fuel cartridge takes a few seconds.

- Water powered mobile phones!?!?
Wow! This is unbelievable. In the year of 2010 your mobile phone may be powered by water. Samsung Electro-Mechanics has announced that they have developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that runs on H20.

And these are just a few of the "work in progress" technologies that i stumbled upon. Yea, i know, many of the stories are kinda' outdated, but it's nice to know that there's so many alternatives that we'll be able to choose from in the near future.
If anyone has anything to add, or finds any interesting story, feel free to contribute to the thread.

Some of them have already been implemented! The lithium-polimer batteries used to be on a list like that, years ago, and now most Sony Ericsson phones have it. It's way better than Nokia's classic li-ion bats I wish N95 had a 1300 mAh Li-Pol so that it would have lasted for 4-5 days instead of 1
