Garmin Mapsource Caribbean and Bermuda Homemade Topo and POI maps - No unlocking need
Caribbean Roads and Topo includes: coastlines, major roads, topographic contours, points of interest, lakes and rivers. Not all islands have the same level of detail. See screenshots at right. According to map author, Richard Smith, Caribbean Roads and Topo has more road detail than Garmin MapSource World Map.
install the Caribbean Roads and Topo v1.20
Then update the mapset to Caribbean Roads and Topo v1.30
by Richard W. Smith, he says:
The maps cover from 7 to 27.66 degrees North and 59 to 90 degrees West. The non-island land masses are included mainly for reference. The entire coverage area has at a minimum the same level of road detail as Garmin's basemap or Worldmap. This data is from NIMA's VMAP0 database. Some other areas such as parts of Central America, parts of South America, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao have data from NIMA's VMAP1 database. This database is much more detailed than the VMAP0 data, but it is still far from residential street level detail. The area from 18 to 27.66 degrees North and 59 to 90 degrees West also has some general nautical data from the NGA Digital Nautical Charts (DNC's), however my maps should NOT be used for marine navigation. The topographic contours are at 5 meter intervals and were generated from raw SRTM data (unless otherwise noted), all contours 15 meters and below were filtered out to save quite a bit of manual work getting rid of all the contours from the waves. The coastline data that I used is a little off in most places, I did use the correct datum & projection for the data. I will clean up the coastline data for an island when I add the other detail for that island.

Garmin Mobil XT was working fine on my LG Incite until I decided to install these maps. I opened RAR files, followed the instructions and the installation seemed to go smoothly. However now, when I select, say, Where To? -> Addresses I get "Detailed maps are required to use this feature. Visit garmin dot com for more information." I tried to regenerate and reinstall the 2 .unl files for the North America 2009 maps but it didn't help? Any ideas?
download the the new unlocked North America map and overwrite the old one, if you have another map rename it gmapsup2.img
no unl file needed for both caribbean nor NAM
Thanks. I am not sure I understand it though.
1. These are the files I currently have in \Storage Card\Garmin - gmapbmap.img, GMAPSUPP.IMG, gmapsupp.unl and sw.unl (plus 6 folders). Do I remove any of these first?
2. Once I install garmin north america city navigator 2010.40 over the existing installation, do I install Caribbean maps again?
3. At what point do I rename gmapsupp.img (BTW, it's gmapsup2.img, not gmapsupp2.img, correct?) ?
Thanks again,
Val.
hou will have in your sd garmin directory
1 gmapbmap.img --world basemap
2 gmapsupp.img-- North american map
3 gmapsup2.img-- caribbean map (always 8 digits)
4 sw.unl -- needed to unlock your garmin software
no unlock code for maps coz they'r already unlocked
please before making any change backup your old map on pc
Thanks. When I install maps, they are copied to my storage card automatically. How to I make sure American maps don't overwrite Caribbean or vice versa? Do I need to install Caribbean first and manually rename gmapsupp.img gmapsup2.img ?
ah yes ,this caribbean map is mapsource so it will be gmapsupp.img , so rename NAM gmapsup2.img and copy it in your sd garmin directory connecting your device via usb
Somehow I don't have much luck copying and pasting NAM file gmapsupp.img from PC to my phone - it copies for hours and hours without an end in site. Is there another way to get it into the Storage Card (unfortunately I don't have a USB converter for microSD)? Could I use mapsource?
