Thanks goes out to T3 for this one...
Watch out Nintendo – it’s the GP2X Meet the games playing, movie showing, photo displaying device with more power than a DS – heck, it’s like a PSP lite. [Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...] The GP2X: old school games and bags of possibilities. It might not be made by one of the big names in the business, but the GP2X is a handheld console that has one distinct advantage over the DS, GBA and PSP – it runs on open source Linux software. This means that anyone can develop games for it. You can whip up a game, then simply hook the console up to your PC and download them – no fuss, and no need to shell out masses of extra cash. Not that you have to know the ins and outs of coding to get games up and running here – it comes with the classic likes of Quake and Duke Nukem 3D pre-installed, and others are available for download. The console is powered by a couple of 200MHz CPUs (making it beefier than a DS) and has 64MB of on-board memory. There are stereo speakers and an SD card allowing you to move DivX videos, photos and music on to it for mobile playback on the 320 x 240 screen. The system doesn’t launch until next week, but you can pre-order it, where it costs £125. We're endeavouring to get our paws on one, so expect the T3 verdict very soon.
