Now you can prevent your kids from watching porn by telling them, without lying, that porn can make them blind.

A new research conducted by Vanderbilt University psychologist David Zald and Yale University researchers Steven Most, Marvin Chun and David Widders proves that people shown erotic or gory images frequently fail to process what they see immediately afterwards.

"We observed that people fail to detect visual images that appeared one-fifth of a second after emotional images, whereas they can detect those images with little problem after neutral

images," Zald, assistant professor of psychology and member of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development, said.

Anyone who has ever slowed down to look at an accident as they are driving by, or has been stuck behind someone who has, is familiar with the "rubbernecking" effect..

Zald and his colleagues set out to determine if the rubbernecking effect carries over into more minute lapses of attention through two separate experiments.

In the first experiment, research subjects were shown hundreds of pictures that included a mix of disturbing images along with landscape or architectural photos. They were told to search the images for a particular target image. An irrelevant, emotionally negative or neutral picture preceded the target by two to eight items. The closer the negative pictures were to the target image, the more frequently the subject failed to spot the target. In a subsequent study, which has not yet been published, the researchers substituted erotic for negative images and found the same basic effect.

In the second experiment, the researchers sought to determine if individuals can override their emotion-induced blindness by focusing more deliberately on the target for which they are searching. In this experiment, the subjects undertook two different trials. In one they were told specifically to look for a rotated photo of a building; in the other they were told to look for a rotated photo of either a building or a landscape.

After running the tests, the researchers discovered that they were partially right: specific instructions helped some subjects control their attention, but it didn't help others.

"We think that there is essentially a bottleneck for information processing and if a certain type of stimulus captures attention, it can basically jam up that bottleneck so subsequent information can't get through," Zald said. "It appears to happen involuntarily."

"We increasingly are suspicious that people who are more neurotic or harm avoidant may not be detecting negative stimuli more than other people, but they have a greater difficulty suppressing that information," Zald added.

It sound interesting . especially for children .

The best way to prevent the kinds doing it is letting them do. My parents never said anything against porn or violent PC games etc. so I found out on my own that it is not as good as everybody tells you.

Well from my opnion -- "We can not stop the child from let him to watch porn" Let him to do and let us do also.

Its up to you whether you think it is right or wrong. At the end of the day it is natural to do such things and if people want to watch it then thats their choice.
Children will find it whether you try to stop it or not. After all when they are in puberty their hormones are controlling them and not anything taught to them by parents/religion/society. You can not control your emotions, your emotions control you.

I think the hardcore stuff can seem repulsive for a child and as a parent you have to try to keep it away from them but anything in a movie (blockbuster American 18 Cert.) I think can be educational cause its regulated pretty well by not showing genitals andfrom there you can anwser any inquisitive questions they may ask...

As for violance I think it should be avoided totally I even think some of the cartoons today are unsuitable... Has anyone seen Rocco??? He's not suitable for kids as far as I am concered...

Hmm...Why would a child be watching an 18 cert blockbuster?! I wouldnt let my kids watch one for educational purposes or not!

There are loads of movies out there that even I find disturbing. I think theres a British one called Essex Boys which I saw once knowing nothing of it. It has a lengthy drug rape murder scene in that is really shocking (and im quite liberal) Im curious how it got past the censors! I wouldnt sit down with any kid to watch a film like that with a view that they might learn something 'educational' about it lol In that sense, porn is not so bad as it does not show any violence, unless you searched a backalley store for one that specialised in tht particular fetish, and the acts they do are largely natural as regards to raping, robbery, murder, homicide, arson, prostitution, drug use etc that is seen in your 'blockbuster American 18 Cert' films!

Obviously Im not suggesting you show kids porn, its just a comparison.

Did I say that I would alow a child to watch a violent sex scene??? Did you read my post??? lol???? In fact I said the opposite... Nothing good comes from violence and any educated person would know this... Sex & love making if portrayed in loving and caring manner can only help a child understand... Would you let a your child go out and get pregnant or make a girl pregnant because you were too squimish to discuss sex with them... Or maybe you think they teach these things in school??? Well not in England they don't and not in Cyprus either which means the resposibility rests soley with the parent...

My 8 year old has a book all about sex (Made for children of course) and you would be suprised the detail it goes into, If I am watching a movie with my wife that has a love scene I don't switch it off quickly and get embarrased in front of my child, I try to explain the situation to them...

Of course you can always avoid the issue so they get inquisitive and get hold of the movie you just mentioned ESSEX BOYS and watch that instead...

I mean its easily obtainable right???

I have heard of this movie before acctually and its a true story about a gang in essex that comitted heinous crimes in their area...

How did you manage to watch this movie anyhow without knowing anything about it??? - It's not something I would ever watch...
