Default Ultra Hi-Def debuts in Europe

You'll need a big TV - like this 103-inch Panasonic, but with a much higher resolution screen - to get the best out of Ultra-HDTV. If it ever arrives.

And here we were thinking 1080p was about to show us “true HD.” But nope, Japanese brain-boxes have just shown off Ultra-HDTV to a room full of lollygagging journalists and broadcasters at Amsterdam’s International Broadcasting Convention. The format uses a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels, making it around 16 times more detailed than regular HDTV.
Dr Masaru Kanazawa, one of the senior engineers behind the technology, told the BBC: “When we designed HDTV 40 years ago our target was to make people feel like they were watching the real object. Our target now is to make people feel that they are in the scene.”
In the past, it has been claimed that U-HDTV is simply “too real” for many people to watch: the sheer amounts of detail on display have been known to cause nausea and dizziness. However, reports from IBC suggest that the technology is mighty impressive, with one observer salivating: “It was fantastic. Pin sharp, extremely lifelike, vibrant colours and fantastic sound [it uses a 24-speaker surround sound setup]. It makes regular High Definition look rather untidy.”
But don’t worry – it’s likely to be at least 25 years before the technology is ready for real-world use, so there’s no need to start looking for yet another new telly. And even if you wanted to, there isn’t a TV on the market that could come close to displaying Ultra HD in its native resolution.
