It can be a humbling time to be a Homo sapiens — or at least a vain Homo sapiens. As the planet’s reigning species, we’ve lost count of all of the remarkable abilities we possess that elevate us above the other beasts — language, tool use, empathy, arithmetics. The problem is, the more closely evolutionary biologists study animals, the more they discover that at least some nonhuman species exhibit the very same talents, even if in a rudimentary way.

Ah, but of course, humans still own friendship. Animals might be capable of companionship, caretaking and loyalty to the herd, flock or pride, but surely that’s just biology at work. They protect kin to protect their genes. They do favors for unrelated individuals because they expect a favor in return — a clinical transaction known as reciprocal altruism. What’s missing is the true generosity, communication, long-term commitment and sacrifice that defines human friendship, right? Wrong — and a growing field of science, which we report in this week’s TIME cover story (available to subscribers here), is turning up all kinds of extraordinary proof.

Take the pair of wild chimps known as Hare and Ellington, unrelated males who would hunt together, share food and hoot in communication over great distances when they were separated. A favor done by Hare today might not be returned by Ellington for months — far longer than the quick quid pro quo of reciprocal altruism. The favor was, well, just a favor. And then, too, there was the deep period of what could only be described as mourning that Hare went through when Ellington died.

Or take the three old female dolphins in Sarasota Bay — Nicklo, Squiggy and Black Tip Double Dip, who would spend hours, indeed whole days, swimming, playing and resting in one another’s close company. The trio would hunt fish together too — which can be nothing but a feeding tactic, since dolphins that cooperate better eat better as well. But it was the serene Golden Girls time they shared that seemed the true marker of their friendship.

Across the animal kingdom — among baboons, rhesus monkeys, horses — investigators are discovering similar improbable relationships that play out in many of the rich, sustained ways our own friendships do. And scientists have barely begun looking at the mysteries of cross-species bonds — the tortoise and the hippo, the cat and the crow, the pig and the monkey. How can animals that are so different draw so close? How can predator befriend prey?

The more we learn about animal friendships, the more we can understand the bonds unrelated humans share. And since friendships are known to improve longevity and reduce disease rates, the same research could also help us live longer, healthier lives.

Dad may be credited with more than just your facial features. A new study suggests that heart disease risk may be passed from father to son.

The study, published in The Lancet, analyzed data on more than 3,200 men enrolled in several British heart disease studies. The researchers focused on genetic markers on the Y chromosome — which is present only in male DNA (women have two X chromosomes) — and found that men with a certain genetic variant were 50% more likely to have coronary artery disease than those without it.

The increased risk was independent of other contributors to heart disease such as age, weight, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking.

MORE: Why Fathers Are Less Likely to Die of Heart Disease

It’s not clear why this particular genetic signature may increase heart risk, but the researchers speculated that it has to do with its influence on inflammation and immunity. Reported Scientific American:

The genetic variant came with altered patterns of regulation in 19 key pathways — all of which were linked to immune and inflammatory responses. These differences might play a role in atherosclerosis, or the hardening of the arteries, noted the researchers, who were led by Fadi Charchar, of Australia’s University of Ballarat. “Dysfunction of immune response is a well established contributor to atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease,” they wrote.

The findings do not suggest that the variant accounts fully for men’s heart disease risk, or that scanning Y chromosomes would help predict an individual man’s risk of developing coronary artery disease. But the association offers an interesting avenue for further scientific inquiry.

The study is exciting for researchers because it gives the role of the Y chromosome new meaning. “The major novelty of these findings is that the human Y chromosome appears to play a role in the cardiovascular system beyond its traditionally perceived determination of male sex,” said principal investigator Dr. Maciej Tomaszewski, a clinical senior lecturer in the University of Leicester department of cardiovascular sciences, in a statement.

Contrary to popular belief, cesarean section appears not to be the best way to deliver preterm babies who are small for their age, according to research presented Thursday at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

At-risk babies have traditionally been thought to benefit from c-section deliveries, but a study by researchers at Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities finds that c-sections did not lessen their odds of complications and in fact increased their likelihood of breathing problems. Compared with similar preterm babies born vaginally, infants delivered via c-section had higher rates of respiratory distress syndrome.

“These findings show not only is it not protective, but these babies have worse respiratory outcomes probably as a result of not passing through the vaginal canal and getting that compression that helps remove much of the amniotic fluid from their lungs,” says Diane Ashton, deputy medical director of the March of Dimes, which crusades against prematurity. The March of Dimes is trying to educate women that medically unnecessary c-sections — and regular inductions — should not be performed before 39 weeks.

MORE: Patience, Mom: More Hospitals Say No to Scheduled Delivery Before 39 Weeks

That’s not to say that c-sections don’t have their place. Cesarean deliveries are advised for breech babies or those whose heartrate plummets, as well as infants whose umbilical cord comes out before they do — a condition known as prolapse.

Researchers looked at birth certificate and hospital discharge papers for 2,560 small-for-gestational-age babies who were born prematurely in New York City between 1995 and 2003; 46% were delivered vaginally and 54% arrived via cesarean. They found that those babies delivered by c-section before 34 weeks of pregnancy stood a 30% great chance of having breathing difficulties than babies born vaginally at about the same point in pregnancy.

Overall, preterm births cost the U.S. more than $26 billion each year.

eople who drive within three hours of smoking marijuana are at nearly twice the risk of being in an accident that leads to serious injury or death, compared with sober drivers, according to a new review of the research.

About 4% of the American adult population — nearly 11 million people — report having driven under the influence of a drug other than alcohol, overwhelmingly marijuana.

Prior research on the risks of stoned driving has been mixed, with about half of the studies finding that marijuana raises the chance of crashing and the rest showing either no effect or a slight decrease in risk. Driving simulation studies with experienced marijuana users suggest that when people have consumed high doses of the drug, there’s an increased risk of accident, but that, unlike with alcohol, users are aware of their impairment and tend to drive more cautiously, rather than with greater recklessness.

MORE: Why Pot Smokers Are Paranoid

For the new review, published in BMJ, Canadian researchers pooled the results of nine well-designed, high-quality studies that included nearly 50,000 drivers involved in crashes in multiple countries. They found that recent marijuana use was associated with a 92% increased risk of fatal or near-fatal accidents. The better the quality of the study, the more likely it was to show an increase in marijuana-related risk.

The risk for minor collisions, however, was not raised significantly — possibly reflecting the fact that many stoned drivers attempt to be more cautious and can therefore compensate for some risks. That compensation may fail, however, when quick reflexes are most needed.

While driving stoned is clearly risky — and combining marijuana with alcohol is even more dangerous — drunk driving remains a bigger hazard on the road. Driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 — the legal limit — nearly triples the risk of crashing; a blood alcohol concentration of .10 almost quintuples it. Although drunk driving deaths have dropped by more than half since 1982, they still represent about one-third of all auto fatalities and kill about 11,000 people annually.

MORE: How Medical Marijuana Laws May Cut Traffic Deaths

Determining the precise role of marijuana in traffic deaths is more complicated than studying alcohol because blood levels of marijuana’s active ingredient, THC, are not always directly linked with levels of impairment the way blood alcohol levels are.

Interestingly, researchers have also found that states that legalize medical marijuana have fewer fatal car crashes, largely because of a decline in drunk driving. In other words, people may be substituting marijuana for alcohol — and while it’s not advisable to drive under the influence of either — the net result, when it comes to traffic deaths, could be a reduction in harm because smoking pot raises the crash risk less than drinking does.

A Cancer Drug Reverses Alzheimer’s Disease in Mice

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University have discovered that a drug currently used to treat cancer patients can reverse the cognitive deficits related to Alzheimer’s disease in mice, and what’s more, it accomplishes this feat in a remarkably short period of time.

The drug, called bexarotene, has been approved for the treatment of a type of skin cancer since 1999. In the new experiments with genetically engineered mice, the drug quickly cleared away the beta-amyloid plaques in the brain that are believed to cause cognitive deficits in Alzheimer’s disease.

This is not the first time that scientists have essentially cured Alzheimer’s in rodents. A decade ago, scientists got excited when a potential Alzheimer’s vaccine appeared to chew up nerve-destroying amyloid protein deposits in animal brains, but were equally disappointed when it failed to do the same in human patients.

Researchers raised hopes again when they found that an enzyme, gamma secretase, effectively suppressed the formation of amyloid — the naturally occurring protein becomes problematic when it isn’t cleared away quickly enough — in the brains of mice with Alzheimer’s-like disease. But last year Eli Lilly shut down its work on the compound when the first human patients treated with the enzyme in a trial failed to show improvements in cognitive function. In fact, they showed worse declines than those given a placebo.

In other words, the results of studies testing new medical ideas in mice should be met with skepticism, regardless of how compelling they may be. Mice, after all, are not men, and while almost every groundbreaking new treatment in people begins with animal trials, not every mouse study results in a life-changing therapy.

PHOTOS: How Nuns Are Uncovering the Secrets of Alzheimer’s

So with that in mind, let’s take a look at what the Case Western scientists reported in Science. Instead of working at the front end of the amyloid problem — in other words, trying to shut down its production — Gary Landreth and his team focused on the trying to improve ways of ferrying amyloid out of the brain. The body has a built-in way of doing this, relying on proteins called ApoE, which remove fats, including cholesterol, and amyloid from the brain.

After nearly a decade studying these natural clearing mechanisms, Landreth focused on a class of receptors on cells that help them engulf and remove amyloid like hungry molecular sinkholes. Fortunately, the pharmaceutical industry had already developed a drug that facilitated this process: the cancer drug bexarotene.

When Landreth’s graduate student, Paige Cramer, injected the drug into mice with Alzheimer’s-like symptoms, they showed a rapid reversal in their brain abnormalities. Within 24 hours of getting the drug, the mice showed a 25% drop in amyloid in their brain fluid; after two weeks, they had a 75% decline in the sticky plaques formed by amyloid.

The drug also restored the animals’ normal behaviors. After treatment, the mice could build a nest, identify a smell and perform better on water maze tests requiring them to remember how to find a submerged platform. They were also better able to remember a cage in which they had been shocked.

“The effect size and the speed seen with the drug is unprecedented,” says Landreth, “and it gives us all hope.”

MORE: New Criteria May Change Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

That doesn’t mean that Alzheimer’s patients should be asking their doctors for a prescription of bexarotene just yet. The mouse model of Alzheimer’s isn’t perfect. Mice don’t get Alzheimer’s the same way humans do. They build up amyloid protein in the brain, and those deposits form plaques that disrupt nerve function and affect learning and memory, just like they do in Alzheimer’s patients; but in mice, there is no progressive worsening of the condition resulting in the destruction of nerve fibers. Humans lose brain cells and suffer the buildup of detritus from a dying neural network.

So it’s not clear yet whether bexarotene would have the same effect in an Alzheimer’s brain in which some of this destruction is already established. “I want to loudly and clearly say that this work has been done in mice,” says Landreth. “Let’s be very cautious in extrapolating forward to humans. We’ve fixed Alzheimer’s disease in mice a lot, and the translation to humans has been imperfect; in fact, it’s failed.”

Even so, says Dr. Mary Carrillo, senior director of medical and scientific relations at the Alzheimer’s Association, the fact that bexarotene appears to be working at the earliest stages of the disease, and possibly even preventing it from progressing, is very tantalizing. “The clearance of a-beta [amyloid] happens earlier than what we saw with the vaccine,” she says. “And it suggests the intriguing idea that we might be able to interrupt the accumulation of amyloid with earlier clearance and can potentially allow less damage to occur in the brain.”

That would require being able to identify Alzheimer’s patients at the very beginning of what’s been called their long goodbye. And that’s not easy. The most recent studies hint that the build up amyloid and the destruction of nerve cells begins decades before patients show signs of memory loss or other cognitive changes, and pinpointing those early stages of the disease requires more sophisticated ways of tracking either amyloid or physical changes in the brain with imaging techniques. Scientists are making headway in doing just that, and the latest revisions to diagnosing Alzheimer’s, as well as it’s precursor state, mild cognitive impairment, reflect the growing emphasis on these initial stages of the disease. But the line is still fuzzy, and researchers continue to debate the distinction between aging-related senior moments and the first lapses in memory that signal Alzheimer’s dementia.

MORE: New Research on Understanding Alzheimer’s

But if the mouse work translates to people — trials of bexarotene in healthy humans may begin in a few months, but experiments in those with Alzheimer’s would be years away — it could mean the first therapy that could potentially reverse the initial pathological steps of Alzheimer’s. That would certainly go a long way to preventing millions of patients from descending into cognitive decline.
