At least 40 people were feared killed and several injured when a 10-storey residential building here collapsed following a massive earthquake Saturday morning.

Initial reports said the quake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, was felt in several areas of the country.

The initial shocks continued for almost two minutes. In Islamabad, the quake was felt at 8.58 a.m. and was followed by intermittent aftershocks.

In the F-10 sector of Islamabad, a portion of the 10-storey building known as Margallah Towers collapsed.

Most victims were still asleep when the disaster struck because Saturday is a holiday for schools as well as most private offices and multinational companies.
